Get found on Etsy
Etsy publishes the conditions a listing has to meet before search gives it a chance, and most new listings I look at miss two or three of them. I turned Etsy's own help pages into a month of short daily tasks, so a new shop meets every one of those conditions before it spends anything on ads.
The question
this build answers
I am opening an Etsy shop. What do I do first, and how do I get my listings shown in search?
From the first trigger
to the finished job.
The working version, step by step.
Know what Etsy takes before you price
Chapter 1 lays out each fee Etsy charges on an order, with a real £3.99 sale from my own shop broken down line by line, so you set prices from what you keep.
Open the shop in the order Etsy asks
Days 1 to 3 cover the choices Etsy says you cannot undo, like the shop language. They also cover the payment and identity checks, and the logo and policies that Etsy's Search Visibility page counts.
Build a listing that meets the published requirements
In days 4 to 9 I turned each requirement Etsy lists into a task: a 2000-pixel primary photo of one finished product, a title that uses its 140 characters, all 13 tags, alt text on every image, the most specific category and a return policy.
Collect keywords with free tools
Days 10 to 16 are my own method for building a keyword bank from Etsy and Google autocomplete, result counts and your Stats, rewriting one listing a day so you can tell what worked.
Earn trust and the first reviews
Days 17 to 23 cover the customer service minimums Etsy names, same-day replies and dispatch with tracking, and asking for reviews in the ways Etsy allows.
Read the numbers before you pay for ads
Days 24 to 30 start with your Stats. Etsy makes a new shop wait fifteen days for Etsy Ads, and I only switch them on for listings that already get views. Offsite Ads get decided with the fee lines in front of you.
The guide, instant download
Sell on Etsy 2026: the 30-day setup and search guide, with the keyword bank and listing checker
You get the 10-page PDF, the worksheet for Excel or Google Sheets and a README. It is an instant download with nothing to install. If a step stops matching what Shop Manager shows you, message me from the order with the step number and I will check it against the current Etsy page.
Open the guide on EtsyWhere the rules come from
I read ten Etsy help pages on 16 September 2026 for this guide: the fee pages, opening a shop, image requirements, tags, the Search Visibility page, SEO for shop and listing pages, and Etsy Ads. Each chapter names the pages it uses.
The keyword method and the daily plan are mine, from running my own shops, and the guide says which parts those are.
Run on my own shop first
Before selling it, I ran the checklist on my own live listings the same week. Their titles went to between 130 and 140 characters, and every image got alt text.
The worksheet in the download counts a title against 140 characters, each tag against 20 and each image description against 500, which is how I checked mine.
The parts that break
Etsy changes its rules. When a page on help.etsy.com disagrees with the guide, I would follow the page, and a message from your order gets the step checked against Etsy's current wording.
Etsy says nobody can promise a search ranking, and this guide makes no such promise.
Before you spend anything
The fit matters.
Who should not buy this
If your shop has been running for a year and its listings already meet Etsy's published requirements, I would skip this. Most of it will be familiar.
If you want someone to tell you what to sell, or you want tax advice, this guide covers neither.

A few useful
answers.
Is this based on Etsy's official rules?
Every rule and figure comes from Etsy's own help pages, read on 16 September 2026 and cited in each chapter. The keyword method and the daily plan are mine, and the guide marks them as mine.
Will it get my listings to the top of search?
Etsy says nobody can promise a ranking, so the guide promises none. It gets a listing to meet each requirement Etsy publishes for a chance at priority placement.
Do I need paid tools?
You need none. The keyword chapter uses Etsy and Google autocomplete, result counts and your own Stats, and the worksheet opens in Excel or a free Google account.
Does it work for digital products?
It works for handmade, vintage, print on demand and digital shops. Where a step differs for digital items, like delivery and reviews, the guide says so.
